DIRT DOWNHILL FANTASY LEAGUE 2012 NOW LIVE

DIRT DOWNHILL FANTASY LEAGUE 2012 NOW LIVE

The Dirt Fantasy League in association with Trek has returned for 2012, once again offering up a full build bike to the most clued up Downhill World Cup manager out there.

UK residents will also be eligible for the second place prize, a training day with none other than 2011 World Cup Champion, Tracy Moseley.

With over 6,000 users taking part in 2011 we’ve stepped things up this year, bringing in Fantasy League Limited, the originators of the whole fantasy league concept back in 1991.

As always registration is totally free and anybody can sign up and create their own team and mini-league, challenge friends and even chat on-site via instant messaging.

The rules are slightly different however, with £1million to spend on five riders, and ten transfers to spread out across the season. Rather than entering just one rider into the World Championships, your whole team will be taken into account this year, which is where tactical use of transfers will come into its own.

Gigi Rüf – Slash Snowboards

Gigi Rüf - Slash Snowboards

Who else are we expecting to create their own snowboard brand? Honestly? The Helgasons have done it with their Lobster Snowboards and it only paved the way for more to do it themselves but who were you expecting to do it next? Probably Shaun White by all accounts. He’s already selling his own scooters and his own brand of hair product… Ok, that last one is a guess but it’s only a matter of time!

I hate to break the news that it’s not Shaun White making his own brand of snowboard, it’s the oh-so-popular ripper, Gigi Rüf. He’s teamed up with board makers Nidecker to bring you his brand new range much like the Helgasons teamed up with Bataleon for their triple base technology. He’s already started on his pro-team by adding all-round freestyle King, Johnnie Paxson and confirming there will be a pro-model board made for each of them. Get your money ready for Autumn 2012!

She was a freeskiing great and an inspiration to many, so it’s with huge regret that we have to inform you of her passing. Here’s the official statement from the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association:

Sarah Burke seriously injured

Sarah Burke seriously injured

We never like hearing about anyone getting injured let alone a professional in one of the sports we follow. Unfortunately today is one of those days.
We received news this morning that Sarah Burke has been seriously injured and is now in a coma after crashing in the superpipe in Park City. This is the same halfpipe that Kevin Pearce crashed in back in 2009 which left him seriously injured. He is now back on the snow and we’re hoping that Sarah makes a similar recovery back to the snow soon.

The story that we received was that Sarah was attempting a flatspin 540 which she landed on the flat of the pipe. She landed on her feet but this popped her back up and she subsequently landed on her head. Witnesses have said that it didn’t look like a heavy fall but must have hit her in the right place. Of course this is very sad news so everyone at Mpora wishes her the best and our thoughts are with her and her family. We’ll try to keep you updated as we receive more news.

Get better soon Sarah!

“Good Morning Gravity” wins Short Stories

“Good Morning Gravity” wins Short Stories, the filmmaking competition fuelled by Relentless Energy Drink.

MPORA Action Sports

Richard Forne has walked away with a £10,000 prize and the chance to work with Relentless Energy drink in 2012 for his emotive portrait of, Relentless Energy Rider, Nikki Croft’s recovery from a serious brain injury, ‘Good morning Gravity.’ Richard came out on top against five other talented young filmmakers to be crowned the winner of the 2011 Short Stories filmmaking competition, sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink.

The crash Nikki had in October 2010 left him physically and mentally shattered and it was his slow, occasionally painful, but ultimately uplifting recover that Richard captured so well in “Gravity”. The films stunning mix of narrative flow and beautiful cinematography captured the judge’s imagination.

Jake Burton diagnosed with cancer

Jake Burton diagnosed with cancer Photo: Hansi Herbig

This is some unfortunate news for the snow world as the founder of Burton, Jake Burton, has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. It’s in its early stages and has been caught early, which is a great sign. The majority of people survive after chemotherapy and possible surgery.

He sent an email to his global team which reads like this:

Good News and Bad News

The bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that it is as curable as it gets. What I have is called Seminoma, also known as Testicular Cancer (think Lance Armstrong). I have three months of chemo ahead with the possibility of surgery along the way.

Last week was a rough one for me and Donna in that for several days my prognosis looked far, far worse. What struck me and everyone around me as unusual during this time was the fact that I didn’t get that upset about my situation. I have come to the conclusion that this for sure is simply a reflection of the people I’m surrounded and supported by.

Shaun White: Snowboarding’s biggest sell out?

Shaun White: Snowboarding's biggest sell out?
Photo: Gabe L’Heureux“There’s only so much advertising space on a helmet.”

Shaun White is, without a doubt, one of the biggest names in snowboarding. He’s won numerous gold medals in the Winter X Games and the Winter Olympics. He’s had a private halfpipe built for him, earnt millions in sponsorship and been on the front cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Is there a line though and will he cross it?

FIS given full control of Olympic snowboard qualification over TTR

FIS given full control of Olympic snowboard qualification over TTR

After the debacle I spoke about yesterday with the UCI and their new title sponsor, Rocky Roads, the FIS have managed to make some headlines in the snowboarding world.

Terje Haakonsen wrote an open letter back in January to the FIS about the ruling of the qualification process. He states: “The Olympic system for snowboarding is wrong; preserving the status quo is not an option.” Pretty strong words form the Godfather of snowboarding but would it change anything? We were all hoping that the TTR would have some sort of say in the qualification process and, in a dream world, be able to control how snowboarding is judged in the Olympics.
